Electrik Red: How To Be A Lady

By: Ace W.
Date: Monday, June 15th, 2009

It's hard to forget Rihanna's hot single, Umbrella, produced by Christopher 'Tricky' Steward back in 2007. Well meet 2009's girl group, Electrik Red. They're new, fresh, and sexy R&B vibe is no doubt the talk of the month, and with their new album up and out on shelves they'll definitely be the centre of attention for the next while. Well known R&B singer, The Dream, discovered the four talented ladies and got them a record deal with Def Jam Records. "He [The Dream] set us up with Tricky. Once we saw him everything was up and running", they stated. Thus, Naomi, Sarah, Lesley, and Binkie were born.

Their history as back up dancers for artists they've worked with isn't only what sparked their interest in the industry, part of it is the way they met each other; "Lesley and I knew each other from high school" Binkie adds, "We all kind of met behind the scenes when we ended up on the same job." Naomi and Sarah, both from Toronto, have grown together as well. When asked how they keep their group together both professionally and casually the girls stress that their relationship is first and foremost based on a friendship. "We've been together for almost six years, we've been holding up on jobs, tours, shows, and videos" Naomi says. "We would never fall apart." A group that holds values from NYC and TDOT, one would figure that it can get hectic when trying to achieve a certain image. But Binkie assures us that the love they have for each other is strong enough to support their ideas as a group, too.

Electrik Red is no doubt making their mark in the industry. Looking at the popular artists such as Trey Songz, J.Holiday, Ne-Yo...R&B has grown and developed over time. What these four ladies have to offer is definitely something fresh and innovative. They've been compared to other girl groups like The Pussycat Dolls and they have been more than open to that image. "It's cool to see other girl groups doing their thing and it's flattering to be compared to another group that's thought highly of but at the same time, we want people to see that we're also doing our own thing. We have a lot to offer." Listening to female groups that range from TLC to the Spice Girls for a majority of their youth they've grown to appreciate the idea of a group working together to make music.

After the process of Tricky and Dream working with them, February 2008, Electrik Red had been signed by Def Jam. "It was big news. We were fans of Tricky from the start so to be able to work with him was exciting." Naomi emphasizes on their relationship as a team. "Together we're unstoppable. We've grown accustomed to the work they do and having The Dream as our songwriter is strong, seeing that 'So Good' received plenty of ratings. According to Electrik Red their future in the music biz is bound to come across plenty of collaborations. "We've accomplished so many things the past six years, our next step is world domination. We are going to take over. We would like to see our music heard over seas, in every single continent" Binkie states.

How to Be a Lady: VOL 1 dropped May 26th, and Binkie let the fans know that there's enough "tofu and meat" in there for everyone. "We just hope that our music comes out the way we wanted it to. Our album is full of tracks that can be turned up in your cars, or even if a girl is going through a break up...we want our music to be the kind everyone is able to connect with." Naomi says. The title 'How to be a Lady', says it all.

On behalf of Electrik Red, Sarah states that "Everyday of this experience was a big highlight. Knowing we have a voice and we're being heard is more than enough."
